Local Brecon Committee raises over £150,000 for Cancer Research Wales in less than a decade

Over the last nine years, a highly dedicated team of Cancer Research Wales supporters have held many exciting and original fundraising initiatives to raise a staggering amount of over £150,000 for Cancer Research Wales, with all the money raised staying in Wales to fund vital and pioneering research.

The Brecon and Sennybridge Committee has been in existence since the 1960s and has been fundraising for Cancer Research Wales since 2008.

The committee organises a series of events every year including; bag-packing at local Morrison’s stores; a Flag Day in July, which this year raised £725.25; and other fundraising activities such as Open Gardens, quizzes, concerts and afternoon teas. Last year, the Committee held a successful scrabble evening with supper which raised well over £1,000 for the charity.

The Brecon and Sennybridge Committee, with Mrs Eira Jones as Chairman, has raised an incredible sum of £29,000 since last April and this year has already been full of more fundraising activities, with many more planned before the end of the year. The next event is an afternoon tea, which will be held on September 29th, at Glanwysg, Sennybridge, at the river-side home of local Brecon couple, Mr and Mrs McLean, who will host a pianist for the occasion. The event is followed by a quiz and supper on November 24th.

Jo Copping, who joined the Committee in 1983 and has been Secretary since 2002 discusses the commitment of long serving members: “Lorna Keylock, one of our most longstanding members, joined the original Committee in 1979 and she and her husband Butch have worked tirelessly for Cancer Research Wales raising enormous amounts every year with their annual clay pigeon shoot and through selling raffle tickets at their purpose built kiosk known as ‘Tardis’ in the centre of Brecon on rugby international match days. Our other longest serving Member is Mary Anderson who joined us in 1988 and is the daughter of one of the Founders of the Committee.

“We are proud to support Cancer Research Wales and as a committee we thoroughly enjoy planning and holding all of our fundraising activities to contribute to the amazing work that the charity does to fight cancer in Wales. We are a group of all different ages and backgrounds, but we all have a shared passion for fundraising for a charity close to many of our hearts, and we look forward to raising as much money as possible in the next year ahead!”

Liz Andrews, Cancer Research Wales Director said: “We are hugely grateful for the fantastic support and donations from the Brecon and Sennybridge Committee over the last decade and particularly in the last year. The money they raise at their successful events each year help us fund world-class research and make an enormous difference to the fight against cancer here in Wales.

“Cancer Research Wales’ scientists are among the very best in the world; every day they’re making great discoveries in the areas of early diagnosis, better treatments and preventatives of cancer for the benefit of cancer patients everywhere.”
