Gordon’s American adventure for Cancer Research Wales

An ambitious Conwy hiker is preparing to hike over 2,000 miles across the American wilderness, raising funds and awareness for Cancer Research Wales.

52-year-old Gordon Biggerstaff, who lives in Llandudno, is an experienced hiker and walked the West Highland Way last year – also in aid of Cancer Research Wales.

On 20th March, Gordon will fly out to America to undertake the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, a route of 2,184 miles passing through 14 different states including Georgia, Maryland, Tennessee, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York.

Gordon said: “As a keen long-distance walker, I decided almost two years ago that I wanted to tackle the Appalachian Trail, and it seemed like a brilliant opportunity to raise funds and awareness for a very important cause.

“My friends and family, like so many people, have been affected by cancer and I feel very strongly about supporting cancer charities and funding research into this dreadful disease.

“Every year, pioneering cancer research projects help to reduce its impact; I can’t cure cancer, but hopefully the research funded by Cancer Research Wales can!”

Laura Hooper, Fundraising Manager for Cancer Research Wales, said: “We are incredibly grateful for Gordon’s continued support, and we hope he really enjoys hiking the Appalachian Trail.

“Cancer affects so many people, and all the money and awareness which Gordon raises will contribute to our pioneering research projects right here in Wales and support our mission to try and reduce the impact of this terrible disease.”

Gordon has set himself an ambitious fundraising goal of £2,000. Anyone wishing to sponsor his efforts and support the work of Cancer Research Wales can make a donation at http://www.justgiving.com/Gordon-Biggerstaff or in-store at the Cotswold Camping shop in Betws-y-Coed.

Half of the funds raised by Gordon’s Appalachian hike will help Cancer Research Wales to fund its pioneering projects across Wales, and half will go to a US-based cancer group.
